About Maa Kamakhya

Maa Kamakhya — also called Kameswari, the Goddess of Desire — is a major Shakta deity, worshipped on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati. Her temple is traditionally regarded as one of the most important Shakti Peethas and has long been a centre of Shakta and Tantric traditions.

There is no carved image in the sanctum. According to Shakta tradition the Goddess is worshipped here in the form of the yoni — the symbol of her creative, life-giving power — at a natural stone kept moist by an underground spring.

नीलाचल पर्वत

Nilachal Hill

The Kamakhya temple stands on Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, above the Brahmaputra. The hill is a complete sacred landscape: the main shrine, the temples of the Dasamahavidya, several temples of Shiva, and sacred ponds (kundas). Bhuvaneshwari’s temple crowns its highest point.

Local tradition says the hill turned blue — nila — when the Goddess’s yoni fell here.

शक्ति पीठ

A Shakti Peetha

According to Shakta tradition, when Shiva carried the body of Sati across the universe, Vishnu’s discus divided it, and the places where it fell became the Shakti Peethas. Kamakhya is traditionally identified as the place where the yoni of Sati fell.

The Kalika Purana and the Yogini Tantra are the texts most associated with Kamakhya. Lists of Shakti Peethas differ between texts; Kamakhya is prominent in most of them.

अम्बुबाची मेला

Ambubachi Mela

The great annual festival of Maa Kamakhya. By the temple’s tradition it marks the Goddess’s annual menstruation: the doors close for three days when the Sun, in Mithuna, enters the first pada of Ardra — around 22 June — and reopen on the fourth day after a ritual bath.

Very high crowds are expected. Book early and follow official notices.
